On March 27, 2021, Melina Oseguera (Bundled Smiles Homeless Organization founder), delivered a speech during the SpeakHER Domestic Violence Awareness Rally in Downtown Silver Spring, MD. SpeakHER, an organization and blog run by Noura Oseguera-Arasmou aims to share the stories of domestic violence survivors and provides resources to victims seeking to leave their toxic situations. During the SpeakHER awareness rally, Melina Oseguera spoke on the issue of domestic violence and how it plays a direct role in causing homelessness- particularly among cases of women and children.
"If we can break down and understand the correlation between homelessness and domestic violence, we can and will help survivors find the resources they need." -Melina Oseguera.
In 2007, women stated that domestic violence was the most common reason they became homeless. A comprehensive 2005 study found that one in four homeless women became homeless after experiencing violence. These statistics are heavily alarming but there is much we can do to help reverse the effects of domestic violence on people who are at risk of becoming homeless.
